How Busy, Working Mums Can Get Out of the House Alive (looking Fab!)

Let’s face it. Mornings are tough! Mornings with young kids are tougher and mornings with young kids when you need to get to work are near freaking impossible. Time seems to fly by at light speed and before you know it you’ve spent 45 minutes trying to put pants on your 2 years old.

Here are some simple tips for the super-mums out there to get you out the door and arriving at work looking fresh faced and fabulous, minus the stress.

Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

Those beautiful people who appear at the office looking effortlessly chic and “put together” have thought about their outfit ahead of time. Oh yes, mam, they have! They certainly weren’t rushing around in the dark at 6am trying to get dressed while the baby is screaming from the other room and your toddler is throwing cereal over her head like confetti. Set yourself up for success and spend 20-30 mins on the weekend putting your “work wardrobe” together. Making sure everything is ironed and ready to go, including accessories. If you have room, invest in a small portable clothes stand where you can hang your clothes & park your shoes underneath for maximum satisfaction and extra brownie points.

Get up BEFORE your Kids

This one is SO important and I personally swear by it. Set your alarm and give yourself 15-30 mins before your kids wake up to wash your face, moisturise, put your make up on, get dressed and even enjoy a quick cuppa in peace before the chaos begins. Having that small amount of time to quietly ponder and prepare for the day ahead with help you to feel calm and in control. Your outfit is already prepped and waiting so you can get dressed with ease and grace. No stress here! You be in charge. You set the tone for the day by being organised and amazing from the get go! Nice work, mama.

Add some Colour to your Face

You will never regret spending 5-10 mins each morning putting on a little make up to help you look a little more alive after what feels like a life time of broken sleep. Just because you feel like you’ve been hit by a bus, doesn’t mean you have to look like it. Think of it like a little mini pamper for yourself. If you’re new to makeup or don’t like to wear a lot, no problem, but a little can go a long way. Using a good under eye concealer that hides those dark circles is a non negotiable and an absolute must for any tired mum. A little blush on your cheeks, a sweep of mascara and a slick of your favourite lippy will have you feeling great and ready to slay your day!

Good Hair = Good Day

Consider washing and styling your hair on Sundays (or the night before your work week starts) to set yourself up for ultimate morning success. A quick restyle if it’s absolutely necessary takes only seconds and won’t completely derail your morning. Stock up on dry shampoo like the world is ending. It’s brilliant for creating volume and getting an extra day or two out of your do. If you find yourself in a situation where you only have seconds in the morning to get it together, tame those frizzes and go for a sleek ponytail, low bun or top knot for a quick and chic look. HOT TIP: If you have an important presentation, interview or business meeting, why not treat yourself to a professional blow-dry. You will feel like a million bucks and appear polished and professional – And BTW – you deserve it, Queen!

Don’t be SO Serious – Have Fun!

When planning your outfits, think outside the box a little and don’t be too serious. “Office attire” can easily become dull and boring with dark colours and power suits. *eyeroll*. Inject a little (or a lot) of your personality into your outfits to celebrate you. Wearing something you really love is a sure fire way to lift your spirits and will get you noticed for all the right reasons. Wearing a bright colour that speaks to you, a fun necklace, a bold lipstick or your favourite new pair of heels will put a little spring in your step. When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good, true magic happens!

If I asked you what you think happens during a colour consultation, what would you say? Do you instantly get all sweaty and anxious, thinking I’m going to tell you you can’t wear black?! That everything in your wardrobe is the wrong colour and you’ll need to start again? That I’ll try and make you wear a colour you absolutely hate and you’ll feel terrified and uncomfortable. Nope! Not even close.

I’m here to tell you that getting your colours done is a fun and empowering experience. In a relaxed and comfortable environment, most often in your own home, we will work together to find those colours that look wonderful and have you feeling great about yourself. You will discover the colours that will get you excited about getting dressed in the morning and the colours that will inspire both you and those around you. You will learn tonnes of useful information tailored to your own individual colouring and personality, and best of all, you will never waste another dollar on clothes, jewellery, accessories or make up that just don’t suit you. You will know with absolute certainty what works for you and why. So, here’s what really happens..

Mary Poppins Arrives

I will arrive at your house looking wonderfully stylish and you will watch in amazement as I unpack my bag full of fun, colourful things. I will offer you the opportunity to do my colour psychology quiz which will tell us a bit about your personality and how you typically respond to colour. We will then have a relaxed and informal chat where I will ask you questions about where you are now in terms of colour and perhaps where you would like to be. Would you love to wear bright colours, but you’re not sure they suit you? Would you love to venture away from black and try some other great neutrals? Would you like to know more about creating a capsule wardrobe in your best colours?
HOT TIP: Building a capsule wardrobe in your very best colours is the ultimate dream. This concept takes the stress out of getting dressed in the morning because everything works with everything, and everything looks great on you! Amen sister!

Diagnosing Your Season

Next I will sit you in front of the mirror for your “drape session”. This is in no way scary or terrifying. If you can handle me draping different coloured pieces of material over each shoulder, you’ve got it down! By using this method, we will determine whether you’re more suited to WARM or COOL colours. We will talk about the comparisons, which colours you prefer, which drapes bring colour and light to your face and which ones drain the colour away. Once we’ve determined whether you’re warm or cool, I will try you in BRIGHT vs SOFT MUTED colours. Do the soft colours harmonise with your hair, skin and eye colour, making you glow from within – or, do you need “something stronger” like bold and bright colours to bring you to life? Once we have the answers to these questions, I can reveal which season you are – and, everyone wants to know which season they are, right?

Finding Your Best Neutrals

It is often said that your wardrobe should be made up of about 80% neutrals. 80%, so why not make them your very BEST neutral colours? Don’t spend a fortune on a winter coat in a colour that will drain the life and light out of you and leave you looking like you need to lie down in a darkened room. For example: It’s important to mention that not all whites are created equal. Some women look lovely in a soft or creamy white, while others look positively radiant in a true, bright white. If you saw me in “off white” you would immediately dial 000 as I would look like I’ve died a thousand deaths. This is why it’s so important for brides especially, to know this information, but sadly, they often don’t. You’re reading this so you’re one step closer to getting it right every day for ever more! Well done!

When considering your best darkest neutrals, you will shout out that you love black, you will tell me in a serious tone that you own tonnes of it and upon seeing the black drape, you will snatch it out of my hands and clutch it close to your heart. Haha I know, I get it, you love black. For WINTERS, black is actually your best darkest neutral. Congratulations. For AUTUMNS, it might be a dark chocolate brown or a deep burgundy. For SPRINGS, it might be a medium golden brown or a bright navy and for delicate SUMMERS, a medium charcoal grey, a greyed navy or a deep plum will be stunning on you. Open your minds, lovely people and try something new! A change is as good as a holiday!

Accent Colours

Once we know which neutral colours you should be investing all your hard earned cash in, we explore colour and find out which shades and tones you love. This is the fun part where you get to experiment and try whichever colours you like (and I’ve got loads) to see what feels right and what works best for you. My “stuff the system, put the client first” approach means we can throw caution to the wind and break all the rules. I will start to put your favourite drapes to the side, along with your best lightest and darkest neutrals to create a visual picture for you. We will play around with different colour palettes, outfit combinations, discuss jewellery colours and which accessories will compliment your “wow” colours. You will easily see how all of this valuable information can really work for you in your every day life and have you looking and feeling like an absolute boss!

Finding “The One”

If you know me at all, you will know I love lipstick. I love wearing it, I love the confidence it brings and well, I could bang on about the benefits for hours. So let’s find you “the One” once and for all.

During your consultation, you’ll be presented with a wonderful selection of lipsticks to try. I will show you the difference between warm vs cool colours and explain how you can easily identify which tones you need to look out for in future. Once you see it for yourself and understand the difference, you will never choose the wrong lipstick for yourself again. Hands up who doesn’t have a draw full of lipsticks in the wrong colour?! You can try any or all of the lipsticks on in the comfort of your own house. Many of you probably feel overwhelmed and anxious at the thought of going near a cosmetic counter to find a red lipstick. You’re faced with 200 of them. Then, you’ll try it on your hand, which is nowhere near the colour of your lips, in fluorescent lighting and get it home, only to realise it’s all WRONG for you. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to try these lipsticks on your very own lips GASP!! I will then politely lecture you about the importance of using a lipstick brush for better application and amazing staying power. The only catch is I will ask you to branch out and try some different colours – you never know, you might just love it.

What You Take Away

Towards the end of your consultation, I will offer to take some photos of you wearing your best colours and your favourite lipstick. I will provide a photo collage to you which is a great reminder for you to keep on hand, and to show all of your friends! I will give you handouts to take home with loads of information about your season and you will have the opportunity to purchase your very own colour wallet in your best colours to carry with you when purchasing makeup, clothes, accessories, jewellery and even when choosing hair colours. Don’t be surprised if you’re accused by friends of a new air of smugness about you. This is life changing stuff, and once you know it, not only will you look fresh faced and fab – You’ll be the envy of all your friends who will want the same for themselves! Mark my words!

Investing in your future self is truly the smartest decision anyone can make. Anything and everything is possible for those who are living their best life, who believe they are worthy and who are open to new possibilities.

Being an Image consultant who is simply obsessed with colour, it’s safe to say that I’m not scared to give a bold trend like this a good nudge. But, I can see how it would terrify some people (most people!!) and they might feel like they’re drawing too much attention to themselves. So let’s start small.

Here are some tips on how everyone can wear this trend!!

This is certainly one for the WINTER babes (myself included) who can pull off bright, bold colour blocking like no-one’s business. Go for it, girrrrl!!

SUMMER ladies might like to trade in the hot pink with a softer pale pink (still a great pairing) so they don’t completely overwhelm themselves with too much colour. After all, We want to see you, not the colour!

SPRING ladies will look brilliant in a bright orange red up top & should aim to wear the pink on the bottom half away from their face. Springs are warm, fuchsia is cool.. but fear not… Hot Tip: Just wear the colour that works best for you around your face.

AUTUMN ladies would look wonderful in a slighter deeper tomato red, perhaps reserving the fuchsia for her accessories – pumps, belt or clutch.

Don’t forget the lipstick! Go for your most loved red or pink lippy to give this look even more of a punch.

Need help finding “the one”? The lipstick you’ve been looking for your whole life? The wait is over, lady, so get. in. touch!

WHY EVERY TIRED, OVERWORKED MUM NEEDS A KICK ARSE LIPSTICK or 10!

If you’re a busy, overworked, tired mum who is barely scraping through each day only to do it all over again the next day – I hear you! Not only do I hear you, I am you. In my humble opinion, mums are superwomen and we should all be roaming the streets wearing a god damn cape. A cape in a deliciously sparkly fabric, that is waterproof and protected from any spills or bodily fluids, in a freaking amazing colour that lifts our spirits and makes us look our very best at all times. Amen!

Here we are, taking amazing care of our kids, husbands, partners, families, friends & colleagues, while remembering birthdays, paying bills and keeping all the balls of life in the air, at all times. It’s no wonder we’re exhausted and it’s no wonder we often forget about ourselves in all the chaos. Before long we’re left staring at a tired, pale person in the mirror that we barely (barely!!) recognise.

I am here to encourage you, and challenge you to stop this madness and take back some control. How do you do that, I hear you ask?! Well, I’m going to let you in on a special little sum’n’ sum’n’ that will lift your spirits, get you noticed for all the right reasons and have you feeling like a total bad arse in seconds. No, I’m not talking about that glass of wine you’re destroying every afternoon at 5pm to get you through the dinner and bath routine, I’m talking about a wonderful little thing called LIPSTICK. Oh yes, ladies. Lipstick.

The power of finding “the one” can be truly magical. Not only will that perfect shade help your skin to appear brighter, your teeth whiter and your eyes to sparkle.. it will have you feeling more confident and give you that extra little zing you need to slay through your day like the absolute superwoman that you are.

HOT TIP! Next time you’re feeling flat and completely exhausted by life, I urge you to dig deep and take that extra 10 seconds to apply your best, brightest lipstick (with a lipstick brush, obviously!!). And PING! You will be transformed into a sassy, confident woman who looks great and commands respect. Because I am a WINTER, I need lipstick like I need oxygen and my favourite “I need all the help I can get” lippy typically alternates between FUCHSIA and TRUE RED. I instantly feel happier, more confident and ready to take on whatever the day throws at me. I may even feel slightly smug that I’ve got this all wrapped up. You see, it’s the mindset that accompanies the lipstick that is the true golden nugget, here. It’s the feeling you get from within, knowing you look bloody amazing!

And what about the knock on effect? Not only will you feel more inspired to be the best you can be yourself, you will inspire those around you to step it up and be braver with their choices. It is a known fact that we as humans cannot look at a colour without it evoking some kind of emotion. To me bright = happy. To you, it could be a deeper or more subtle shade that lifts your spirits and helps you to feel fab.

If you, like so many women, have never really worn much make up, or, you would love to give it a go but you have no idea where to start, a colour consultation could be that important first step to finding your mojo and becoming the woman you’ve always wanted to be. The person you NEED to be to live your best life.

It would be utterly impossible to know what suits you and your natural colouring without first learning whether you are warm or cool and whether you’re more suited to BRIGHT or SOFT MUTED colours. Knowing this information will determine which season you are, and once you’re armed with this information, you’ll never waste another cent on something that doesn’t suit you, be it clothing, make up, jewellery, accessories or even hair colours.

For example, A SUMMER lady will look utterly gorgeous in berry coloured lipsticks like plum & raspberry shades, blue based reds and dusty mauve neutrals.

A WINTER could quite easily wear a true, bright red or a bold fuchsia to create quite the stir, or softer rose based neutrals for a more casual look.

A SPRING can wear a bright coral like no-one’s business, or a bold orange-based red to make a statement. Whereas brown, sun kissed peachy tones will compliment her warm colouring for a pretty, every day look.

An AUTUMN will look stunning in a deep burgundy lipstick, a rich raisin brown, or warm cinnamon neutrals to add some spice to her look.

Lets work together to find out exactly what colour your cape should be.

I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for Spring and all the colours that come with it.

So many of us hibernate in Winter, we stick to our dark neutrals; black, brown & navy as if they were our uniform and if we’re feeling really outrageous we might slap on a dark berry lipstick.

Well those days are gone, so get excited about the latest colour trends for Spring.

Ladies who Lavender

Seen all over the runways for Spring / Summer fashion shows, this colour trend is a “must have” for any fashionista’s wardrobe.

Why not try an oversized lavender cardi worn with boyfriend jeans and your favourite white tee. A pair of Lavender skinny jeans with a striped tank and leather jacket.

Or if you’re really ready to commit, why not go tonal and piece together an outfit with varying shades of lavender as worn by Victoria Beckham below.

For those of you who love the lavender trend but are not ready to dive in, head first – try a nail colour or a pretty scarf to get your toes wet.

Pretty In PINK!

Think feminine, think flowing fabric and think romance.  This beautiful blush pink is so soft and unassuming, it could easily be inserted into your wardrobe as one of your lightest neutrals.  Instead of white, why not try a pale pink shirt tucked into a pair of high waisted trousers for the office, or a pretty pink blouse worn with skinny white jeans for an effortlessly chic look.

Bright, Bold & Beautiful

Wall flowers, step aside – this is not a trend for you. Big, bold, bright colours are back, baby, so ditch the black and express your sense of fun by introducing these colours into your life.

Wearing a bold colour from head to toe can be very intimidating & all eyes will be on you, so why not inject pops of colour into your outfit.  Seek out a bright blazer in fuchsia, or a red pencil skirt paired with a leopard print blouse & your favourite pumps. Or, if this is still too much, turn to your accessories. A bright yellow belt, a bold blue tote or hot pink nails.

Silver Metallics

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am metallic obsessed.. I can spot a shimmery item on a sale rack at 100 paces.

The silver metallic trend is absolutely stunning and can easily be incorporated into every day life.  A metallic hand bag is an essential item, in my book. I have a few I like to throw around, and I’m constantly being stopped by women in shopping malls and public bathrooms asking me about “the bag”.

To incorporate this trend into your wardrobe, go for a metallic pleated skirt which is elegant in style and more versatile than you think.  It can be paired with a crisp white shirt for a preppy office look, or worn with your fav rock tee for an edgy, “I’m with the band” look.

Try dusting your eyelids with a shimmery silver shadow for a night out with the girls, or who in their right mind could pass up a metallic mani?

Do you have tonnes of clothes & shoes but very few accessories? It seems that with every wardrobe edit I’ve performed recently, there is a serious lack of accessories going on in everyone’s wardrobes. Being an accessories lover from way back, this leaves me both confused and deeply saddened. I’m usually met with a blank stare when I ask my client where her accessories are.

Friends! Accessories can turn a “meh” outfit into a freakin’ fabulous one and they don’t have to cost a bomb either. Next time you’re strapped for cash but stinging for something shiny and new, think about purchasing a few great pieces that will take your wardrobe to the next level.  Here are some basics that every wardrobe should have…

A Kick-Arse Pair of Sunnies

To me, this is a no-brainer as I may have a small obsession with picking up cool sunglasses here, there and everywhere.  But, in addition to protecting your eyes from the sun, the right pair can make you look, well, so damn cool.  A basic black frame will pretty much go with everything, so do yourself a favour and invest in a decent pair.  For other colours, shapes & styles, there is no shame in going for cheaper brands as they’re more of a nice to have rather than an essential item.  Then, you don’t need to feel bad about owning 10 pairs..or more. #winning!

A Statement Necklace

So, you’re rocking your favourite jeans and white t-shirt combo and you look super cute and all, but something is missing..

A chunky statement necklace in a gold or silver is a must have in every wardrobe. Those with warm skin tones should look for gold, and those beauties with cool skin tones should look for silver.

Your necklace will look amazing with t-shirts, blouses, tank tops, worn over a shirt collar & with your favourite LBD. It can also draw attention away from any “problem areas” you may wish to hide like a rounder tummy or fuller lower half.

It’s worth mentioning that I recently picked up a hand full of statement necklaces from the local markets for a teeny $1 each.  A great option if you’re counting your pennies and times are tough, so get out there and find that pretty piece that speaks to you.

A Pair of Great Earrings

If you’re just starting to introduce jewellery into your wardrobe, go for something that’s relatively versatile. I just can’t go past a good pair of gold chandelier earrings. They can single handedly take your outfit from day to night; Transform your office outfit into something slightly sexier for after work drinks. They’re the perfect accessory to take with you when travelling when going from beach to bar. And, fear not if your ears aren’t pierced, there are great clip on options out there.. you just have to hunt them down.

A Pretty Clutch

A good clutch is another must have item in any wardrobe. Something that you can grab on your way out the door that’s big enough to fit all your essentials for a big night out with the girls.

If you’re someone who relies heavily on carrying sensible (flat!!) shoes around with you on a drunken night out, make sure you factor this in when selecting said, fabulous clutch.

Black is certainly the safest option as it goes with practically everything but I don’t want to encourage you to go too safe here. Think outside the box. I consider leopard print to be a neutral as it just works with most colours and prints, but I’m also a huge fan of a metallic or sequinned clutch to add that element of fun. Sometimes, you just have to have a few accessories that you absolutely love, and if worn with confidence, they don’t have to make total sense.

A Practical (but stunningly gorgeous) Handbag

We carry our lives around in our handbags, right?.. All the every day essentials, all the items we might need, just in case. All the unnecessary items we accumulate and don’t actually need..

And, often, your handbag can also become your nappy bag, lunch bag, gym bag, work bag.. so, it makes sense to have something that’s pretty, but also practical. Big enough to fit in all your must haves but not so big that you’ll be lugging around 5 kgs of crap you don’t actually need. A medium sized tote could be just the ticket.  If you’re choosing to invest in a decent one that will last the distance (did someone just say State of Escape?) it may be sensible to go for a neutral colour that will work with your wardrobe like black, tan, navy or charcoal. But, if you’re someone who likes to throw caution to the wind and portray a certain sense of fun, go for a hand bag in a cool bold block colour like red, neon yellow, or fuchsia. Just wait for the compliments to start rolling in from women who wish they had the balls to buy a bag that isn’t so boring and predictable. Find your inner style queen and you go girlfriend!!

Now, I don’t know about you, but I really struggle in the cold. I mean, I’m freezing when it’s 20 degrees. This could have something to do with why I have a huge collection of jackets & warm, cosy cardigans.

The right jacket can really take your outfit to the next level and you will appear polished and chic.

Here are some of my favourites:

The Denim Jacket

The Denim Jacket is a golden oldie but an absolute essential item in any successful wardrobe.

It just works on so many levels. You can throw it over your drop crutch pants and stripy top for an outing to the park with the kiddies, over a summer dress with sandals for Sunday brunch with the girls, or paired with a leather skirt, printed tee and ankle boots for a rockstar look. I’m also a huge believer in tying a denim jacket around your waist to add dimension and create an easy laidback look.  You can pick one up for under $50 so if you don’t already own one, get cracking!!

The Leather Jacket

This has to be my absolute, all time favourite jacket. Have you ever noticed that everyone looks instantly, well, cooler when rocking this bad boy? It’s true!

Pair this jacket with your boyfriend jeans, a hoodie and white sneakers for an effortlessly cool look. Wear it over a maxi dress with an oversized tote for a day of shopping, or with that sexy frock you bought online to wear to your friend’s birthday drinks. Because this jacket is so versatile and you will wear it to death, it is worth investing in a real one. However, if your budget simply won’t allow for this, there are some great synthetic versions around that will still do the trick. Fake it till you make it, I always say! Put this one on your wish list or find an online store with after-pay. You won’t regret it.

 The Blazer

This one is essential for my hardworking, over achieving, career focused sisters out there. You will look polished and professional in a well fitting blazer and no-one would dare not take you seriously.

Once you’ve mastered the black, you can branch out and purchase another one in a great block colour that ties in with your existing work wardrobe. Or, show people your unique sense of style by being bold & confident in a printed blazer. You can wear your blazer of choice with a pencil skirt and blouse combination, over your favourite shift dress with stockings and pumps or even over jeans with a cute cami to wear on the weekend.

Hot tip! You can also stretch the rules with this one. I may have recently been spotted in the office wearing my skinny jeans, black pumps and an Iron Maiden tee. Gasp! But no one even battered an eyelid because blazers are chic and professional and a style staple in every wardrobe.

The Leopard Print Jacket

Now, I will admit that I do have a silly obsession with anything that’s leopard print. So, let’s consider this one more of a nice to have than an essential buy. But none the less, you will be surprised at how versatile this jacket is, even though it’s a print. In my book, leopard print should be considered a neutral and works with almost anything.

I love pairing leopard print with stripes, which sounds strange, but trust me it works.  Leopard print and red are a match made in style heaven. Try an all black ensemble with your LP jacket, a red bag or red pumps and a top knot and you will look incredibly chic and cool.

Or for an edgier look, and one of my favourites.. throw it on over your ripped black jeans, a band tee and a studded bag for a “I’m with the band” look. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll love it & you’ll never regret this purchase.

I used to be of the opinion that white jeans should be reserved for the likes of Kate Moss, and well, that’s about it.

It’s been ingrained in us for years that black is slimming, black is safe, black goes with everything, black, black, black. Well, forget everything you thought you knew ladies, because white jeans are ah-mazing and once you’ve found that perfect pair that has you jumping up and down in the change room and high fiving yourself in the mirror, they are a great asset to any wardrobe.

To achieve that “I just got back from a weekend in the hamptons” look:

Stick to all white. Have you ever noticed that a woman dressed from head to toe in white looks elegant and expensive? Paired with a metallic sandal and gold accessories, you’re bound to turn heads. And if you want to take it one step further, channel your inner Rosie Huntington Whiteley, slick your hair back into a bun and throw on a beige trench. Who knows, you may even bag your very own Jason Statham.. just sayin’.

White + neutrals = CHIC!

White jeans also look effortlessly chic when worn with a neutral colour palette. Throw on a light grey tee or knit, a fedora a pair of cute loafers and a denim jacket and you have yourself the perfect outfit for a day shopping with the girls.

For an edgier look…

(and my god do I love edgy), rock your white jeans with a stripy tank, an army style sleeveless vest and tie a grey jumper around your waist for an easy, laid back look. Oh, and don’t forget your trusty converse sneakers. You’ll be the best dressed mum at the park AND be able to chase after your toddler who can practically run the hundred in under 10 secs. #winning!!

To dress those bad boys up…

Why not try a black and white ensemble, which is always timeless and classic. Pair your white jeans with a black blouse and a monochrome coat. To inject a pop of colour, wear a bold berry lip or a pair of red pumps. Too easy!!

Life is too short for bad outfits so here’s some inspo..
